Do you set goals at the start of every year? Do you wake up with a to-do list in mind? Whether looking to master a new subject, improve your business, or make a personal change, goal-setting is the first step in your journey to success.
It can be difficult to pick and stick with a set of goals, but the act of reflecting and setting an intention can make a difference. When we set a goal, we give ourselves a finish line to move toward, trigger a change in our behaviors and provide a starting push in the right direction.
Need inspiration? If still deciding on your next goal or simply needing a boost to stick with it, find inspiration in these TED Talks.
Have you ever considered a 100-mile swim? Maybe not, but we can still find inspiration in Diana Nyad’s incredible journey. The long-distance swimmer talks about her legendary swim from Cuba to Florida in this TED Talk, and shares inspiration that can guide us through any difficult course. Her mantra: “Find a way.”
“You have a dream and you have obstacles in front of you, as we all do. None of us ever get through this life without heartache, without turmoil, and if you believe and you have faith and you can get knocked down and get back up again and you believe in perseverance as a great human quality,” Nyad says, “you find your way.”
“A lot of organizations set objectives and meet them. They ship their sales, they introduce their new products, they make their numbers, but they lack a sense of purpose to inspire their teams,” venture capitalist John Doerr warns in his TED Talk.
But, he continues, he has advice on how you can avoid falling into that same trap: “First, you must answer the question, ‘Why?’ Why? Because truly transformational teams combine their ambitions to their passion and to their purpose, and they develop a clear and compelling sense of why.”
This, Doerr explains, is the same goal-setting system leaders at Google and Intel use to set the right goals and, as a result, find success. You’ve got to set your “OKRs.” What are those? Listen to his TED Talk and discover your next steps toward results.
